Welcome to

A Dog’s New Life

Our organization is made up of passionate volunteers dedicated to rescuing sick, injured, abandoned, and abused dogs. Our primary objective is to rehabilitate these dogs and find them loving homes, whether in Mexico, Canada, or the US.

Additionally, we actively work to enhance the welfare of animals within our community.

Mission

Our mission is to rescue abandoned, sick, and injured animals within our community. We provide essential services such as food, shelter, and veterinary care to those in need, including cases of animal abuse reported by the authorities. Additionally, we actively promote spaying and neutering to address overpopulation and reduce the suffering of unwanted animals. Our goal is to find loving homes for healthy animals through adoption. Furthermore, we offer education and assistance to the community, emphasizing the health and welfare of their beloved pets.

Vision

Our vision is to build a compassionate community where people deeply value animals and treat them with respect and kindness. We envision a world where every dog receives love, care, and a chance for a better life.

Our Story

Jessica Garibay started dreaming about a shelter in October 2018. She found a dog that had a 360° laceration around her neck. After calling all the associations in PV and other areas, she found no one to help. Jessica was fostering a puppy named Toast and couldn't bring the injured dog into her home. However, she refused to leave the dog alone in this condition. She took action by bringing the dog to the vet, paying for her stay there, and posting on Facebook groups to seek help. Nancy Middleton responded. She told Jessica that as soon as the dog recovered, she could take her to a ranch she owned, but not before, as there was nobody who could take proper care of her. This poor dog was also pregnant, about to give birth, and the pregnancy could not be terminated. She had her babies, and one day after, the puppies all died.

Once healed, Jessica and Nancy took her to the sheltered land, but as there was no fence, a couple of days later, she broke out of her kennel and escaped; she was never found. It was then that Jessica told Nancy she wanted to open a shelter that would never deny care for a dog in need. Nancy offered her land, she had previously bought for charitable use, to create the dog shelter. Jessica started the shelter with nothing but her own resources.

In February 2019 a group of people from Bucerias started to help. Fundraising events were planned, such as the first Bazaar, and volunteers began to get more involved in the shelter. In the months following, great strides were made. New kennels were built, a water pump to provide clean water for the dogs was installed, and a successful walking program was started, showing amazing results in the happiness and socialization of all our dogs.

We have created an amazing space for our dogs with safe clean kennels, a play area, and we are continuing to grow. We are constantly striving to make improvements to keep the dogs safe and healthy. We will keep everyone up to date on the shelter changes as they happen!!

Founder/President

I'm originally from Mexico City but now reside in the Puerto Vallarta area, where I've lived for the past 30 years.

My passion... Dogs

I live for the dogs in need...

Back in October 2018, I decided to do something for the voiceless after rescuing one and realizing the lack of help from other organizations due to the overpopulation and lack of funds.

Now, I live at the shelter and am in charge of the operations to care, rehabilitate, and find homes for over 150 dogs with the help of our amazing team and Board Members.

Karen Chesson

Shelter operations/Adoptions coordinator

Originally from the United States (Nebraska), Karen has lived in Bucerias since 2017, having moved from Denver, Colorado.  She has a BS in Dental Hygiene. Growing up, her family always had dogs and only adopted them from rescues. So it's easy to see why helping dogs in need has become a passion for her.

Karen has three former street dogs herself, one rescued from the streets of Bucerias, two from ADNL. She began feeding and caring for some of the less fortunate dogs in town then decided to become involved with ADNL, to help make a bigger impact.

When she isn't volunteering with dogs, she can be found at the beach, running, weight lifting or traveling with her husband.

Her hope is to help educate people on the importance of caring for their dogs so we can reduce the number of strays, neglected and abused animals in the bay.

Jorie Rizzuto

Director

I am originally from Toronto, Canada, and moved to the Bay of Banderas with my husband in 2019. Dogs have always held a very special place in our hearts, and here in Mexico almost everywhere you turn there are dogs on the streets who are just seeking a safe haven, food, and affection. Our family had already adopted 9 dogs, but it was clear there was a bigger need for help.

I first learned of A Dog’s New Life in 2022 when I volunteered to be a flight angel for a sweet puppy looking to find his way to his forever home. A Dog’s New Life has been able to make a significant, positive, impact on the dogs in and around Bucerias, and I am honored to be able to support this wonderful organization whose goal is to help not only street dogs, but also dogs in need within the community.
