The Street Dog Initiative
One of ADNL’s core goals is to reduce dog abandonment on the streets. However, due to limited shelter space and financial constraints, we cannot rescue every dog in need—a reality that can be difficult for many to understand. That’s why we created the Street Dog Initiative.
🐾 Community Collaboration
With the support of our community, we try to respond when someone alerts us about a dog in need. Not all dogs roaming freely are homeless—many do have owners—but our mission is to help both.
🐾 Supporting Dog Owners
When we’re notified, our first step is to determine whether the dog has an owner. If so, we focus on education and support, ensuring that no dog goes without basic necessities. We work alongside owners to problem-solve, build relationships, and provide veterinary assistance when needed.
🐾 Caring for Stray and Abandoned Dogs
If a dog is found to be stray, abandoned, or homeless, we provide care: food, clean water, medical treatment for injuries, preventive medication, and sterilization to reduce overpopulation. Many street dogs enjoy their freedom and would not thrive in a shelter environment, so our goal is to improve their quality of life where they are.
🐾 How You Can Help
While we welcome dogs into our shelter whenever space and funding allow, we rely on community involvement to extend our reach. You can volunteer your time, donate resources, or even sponsor a dog with monthly contributions to support their ongoing care.
Together, we can make a meaningful difference in managing the street dog situation in Bucerias and ensure every dog—owned or free-roaming—receives compassion and care.
