elmer
Male - Mixed Breed
On February 4, we welcomed this sweet old guy into our care. Elmer was first posted on Facebook on January 26 after being seen roaming the marina in Puerto Vallarta. Someone on vacation was able to give him food and water, but couldn’t take him with them. They did the right thing and filed a report with Green Patrol, hoping he’d be picked up. We saw the post and commented that we could receive him. Everyone knows how much we love our seniors.
We aren’t completely sure whether Elmer was picked up by Green Patrol or rescued by another good Samaritan, but he eventually ended up at the municipal shelter in Puerto Vallarta (the Acopio). Because of our comment on the original post, they reached out to ask if we would be willing to take him into our care. After spending some days there, Elmer was transported to us, where he will remain indefinitely.
Elmer is very old — at least 12 years, likely more. He’s extremely wobbly, very underweight, and clearly has had a hard life. His bloodwork is still pending with the lab. He does have a large mass on his stomach, but the vet does not believe it’s a concerning tumor. Once he’s strong enough, surgery will be done to remove it.
For now, he’s resting a lot, as most senior dogs do. Once we receive his bloodwork, we’ll know if antibiotics are needed. He’s very quiet, gentle, and clearly just grateful to be safe. Elmer will not be available for adoption out of the country. He will only be considered for a Forever Foster here locally, with someone who lives full-time in the Bay. A home which can give him the comfort and love he needs. If he does find a Forever Foster, we will pay for his care for the remainder of his life and always be responsible for him.
We are more than happy to keep him with us for the rest of his life if need be and are excited to see how much stronger and healthier he can become.
We would never say no to a dog because of age. Seniors deserve love, comfort, and dignity too.
