mildred
Female - Mixed Breed
Age: April 2020 Weight: 19kg
Mildred was rescued in Bucerias near the Refuge of Hope. She needed an immediate 15 day foster to be sure she wasn’t actively infected with distemper. She had one negative test and one which was slightly positive. For precaution sake and to protect ALL our dogs she went to a short term foster home. This was to ensure the virus was not incubating/active.
We picked her up and she tested negative! She’s definitely a distemper survivor, as evidenced by her tick. Canine distemper is a serious, contagious viral disease in dogs caused by the Canine Distemper Virus (CDV). It affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems, and can be fatal. If a dog does survive this painful virus, the result is often an uncontrollable body tick; head, limbs etc. It doesn’t mean they’re in pain any longer but it’s the after effect of the disease.
Mildred is now at the shelter settling in. We are sure she misses a quiet foster home but we will do our best to make sure she is comfortable and feels loved.
She is estimated at 5 years old and weighed 16kg when rescued. She’s now up to 19kg! Her fur is growing back in and her skin is slowly improving from the mange, although still a bit inflamed and itchy. Poor thing was covered in motor oil that we had to bathe off her on rescue day. Yes, people in Mexico still believe that’s a cure for mange.
She is under treatment for anemia and erlichea.
Through all of this, she is without a doubt one of the sweetest dogs we have ever met. We’re excited to see her continued progress and mostly excited to welcome her to our family. She will be available for adoption once she’s fully healthy. She will have the tick the rest of her life, however, we have seen they can lessen and at times be unnoticeable.
