This is a sad story, one that likely happens far more often than we ever hear about. Mama Bear Ursa and her four “cubs” did have an owner. Someone who simply discarded them like trash and left them to fate. We were contacted by a concerned neighbor in Valle Esmeralda. He has two dogs of his own—both territorial—so he knew he couldn’t safely take this little family in. Feeling helpless, he reached out for help.

The owner had put the mom and her four puppies outside his house. And not just outside; he left them on the stair landing directly in front of his door, at the top of the stairs. There was no railing or protection. The puppies could have easily fallen, been seriously injured, or worse.

Jessica went immediately to get them. As expected, the owner showed no kindness, concern, or interest in what would happen to them. Thankfully, this family was brought to safety and has now been in our care. Mama is taking care of her pups and another litter of tiny pups we received shortly after she arrived.
